Shattering the Myths About One of Nature’s Most Necessary Nutrients
By David Brownstein, MD

"There are many myths about salt. This article will address those myths and
show you the benefits that unrefined sea salt can have on your health.

Myth 1: There is no difference between unrefined sea salt and refined table
salt.
Myth 2: Salt = hypertension.
Myth 3: A low-salt diet is healthy

All of the above statements are false. The use of unrefined sea salt has
proven to be a tremendous benefit for my patients and I have found it nearly
impossible for someone to achieve their optimal health if they are
salt-deficient..."

This is from Dr Brownstein's Salt your Way to Health Book  page 80

Unrefined Salt Corrects Dehydration

Unrefined salt is the substance that nourishes both oceans (intracellular / extracellular).  The sodium in unrefined salt primarily concentrates in the extracellular ocean while the potassium concentrates in the intracellular ocean.  Potassium is necessary in the interior of the cells to hold onto water.  Other minerals such as magnesium and calcium, both share in helping the two oceans communicate with each other.

If the body senses a salt deficit, the kidneys will have to work extremely hard to hold onto salt in the body.  Prolonged salt deprivation will eventually lead to kidney problems.  When the situation worsens, sodium deprivation will lead to toxic cells and early cell death.

The long-term ingestion of refined salt leads to cellular problems as well as the onset of chronic illness.  Refined salt, lacking in potassium and other minerals, will not nourish the intracellular ocean.  The osmotic pressure of the refined sodium in the extracellular ocean will pull water from the interior of the cell, leaving the cell in a dehydrated condition.  Drinking water won't help; the cell needs minerals.  As the cell becomes more dehydrated, waste products begin to build up in the cell, causing acidosis (i.e., low pH - see Chapter 2 for more information).  Eventually, cell death will be accelerated.  The medial consequences of this include an increase in chronic illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and arthritis, as well as accelerated aging.  Only the use of unrefined salt, with its full complement of minerals and adequate water intake can reverse this condition.
